As part of the efforts to produce an international- level film portraying the of Emir Abdelkader, the public establishment Al Djazairi held its third consultative meeting, yesterday at The National Algerian Library bringing together members of the advisory and expertise committee responsible for the preliminary preparations for selecting the film script on Emir Abdelkader, along with professors from ten central Algerian universities and three researchers from Laghouat and Biskra universities.

Dr. Djamel Yahiaoui, chair of the committee, emphasized the vital role of academic and expert contributions in shaping the film’s key narrative points. He highlighted the importance of crafting a film aimed at a global audience not just Algerian viewers-while maintaining a strong national dimension and selecting scenes with high visual impact. In the other hand, Mr. Salim Aggar, director of Al Djazairi, noted the complexity of such a production, stating that the film should serve as a cultural reference on par with The Battle of Algiers, and stressed that the script must be based on precise historical sources. Echoing these views, Mr. Ahmed Bedjaoui stressed the importance of heeding expert recommendations and asserted that the film must carry a distinctive “Algerian stamp” infused in universal spirit.

Participants offered multifaceted readings of Emir Abdelkader’s life and fighting, ultimately formulating a set of recommendations to guide the committee’s work. Chief among these was the need to provide the screenwriter with dense, well-documented material reflecting a range of historical perspectives and analyses. They also called for an artistic approach that respects cinematic narrative aesthetics while maintaining historical integrity, and that enhances the film’s educational and cultural value by highlighting the Emir’s role in state-building, institutional development, and the dissemination of values.

It was recommended supplementing the film with parallel documentary works, such as a television series or a multi episode documentary. to exceed traditional chronological storytelling in favor of a dramatic structure driven by intelligent selection of pivotal events. Finally, they stressed the importance of grounding the film in national identity while ensuring international resonance through the use of sovereignty symbols like the flag and traditional costums and presenting Emir Abdelkader as a global, humanist leader.
